Thank You for Making the St. Philomena Reunion a Success!

Thank you to everyone who joined us on June 28 at 940 Fillmore for such a memorable St. Philomena Reunion. With more than 120 alumni returning to celebrate the school that shaped generations, the day was a wonderful reminder of the strong bonds and lasting memories that continue to bring our community together. Reconnecting with classmates, sharing stories and laughter, and walking the halls of the historic school made for a truly special homecoming. Your presence, enthusiasm, and support made this reunion a tremendous success, and we are grateful to everyone who attended and helped make the day so meaningful. We look forward to seeing you again at the next reunion!

Our History

St. Philomena Catholic School in Denver was established in September 1922, initially operating out of the rectory with 83 pupils taught by the Sisters of Loretto. A dedicated school building at 940 Fillmore Street opened in 1924, later expanding in 1950 and 1964. Following a 1981 parish merger, it became part of the Church of the Good Shepherd.

Legacy: The original St. Philomena school building was sold, while the school’s educational legacy continued through the combined Good Shepherd Catholic School.  940 Fillmore St., Denver, Colorado, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The school is known for its long association with educating Denver children in the Congress Park neighborhood and beyond.

From St. Philomena to Sewall: A Century of Service

For more than a century, 940 Fillmore has been a place where Denver’s children and families find learning, care, and community. The building first opened in 1924 as St. Philomena Catholic School, welcoming generations of neighborhood students and becoming a cherished landmark now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Sewall Child Development Center, founded in 1944 when Dr. Henry Sewall deeded his home at 13th and Vine to support children and adults with physical disabilities, grew its own legacy of compassion and inclusion over 72 years at that original site. When Sewall moved its headquarters and school programs to 940 Fillmore in 2016, the two histories came together in a natural and meaningful way. Today, the Fillmore campus continues the spirit shared by both organizations, a warm, community‑rooted place where children learn, families are supported, and nonprofits work side by side to strengthen Denver.
